Former NBA star Amar’e Stoudemire was arrested this past weekend at his home in Miami on one count of misdemeanor battery according to online Miami-Dade court records.
The alleged victim was one of Stoudemire’s daughters according to an arrest report obtained by the Miami Herald.
The arrest report does not say if the child that was allegedly struck was the 17-year-old girl or the 14-year-old girl among his four children with ex-wife Alexis Stoudemire. The report did say that the child reported to police that her father punched her in the jaw and slapped her hard enough to draw blood.
“I observed blood stains on the victim’s sweater and sweatpants,” the arrest report states. “The mother of the victim showed me the photo she received from her daughter, which shows the victim crying and blood running down her face.”
Police were called to Stoudemire’s home around 10 p.m. Saturday night. Alexis Stoudemire told police that when she received a photo and a call for help from her daughter, she came to get that child as well as her other two sons to take them home with her. Alexis stated that her ex-husband told her to pick up her daughter because she was being “disrespectful.”
Allegedly, the report states that the daughter had a “disrespectful” attitude with her Grandmother which Stoudemire was not happy with. The daughter told police that when she denied having such a tone with her grandmother, her father “then responded with ‘You’re talking back again’ and punched her on the right side of her jaw.” She then continued to say that he slapped her face and bloodied her nose “and continued slapping her on the left side of her body.”
Online court records show Stoudemire was released from Miami-Dade Corrections custody Sunday afternoon after posting a $1,500 bond. There is currently a “no contact allowed” order between Stoudemire and his daughter.
Sunday evening, Stoudemire posted on his Twitter and Instagram page stating, “Over the last 24 hours, an incident at my family home led to my being charged with assaulting my daughter. It is an allegation based on a report that does not square with the facts. I am of the Jewish faith, today Jewish people all over the world celebrate Hanukkah and hear the story of how we fought wickedness. I believe that ‘whatever is hateful to you, do not do to others.'”
As the investigation unfolds, the facts will show the allegations to be groundless as my daughter’s medical condition is not the result of being assaulted by a father who is nearly 7 feet tall and weighs 250 pounds. I could never see myself assaulting any person, especially my children. I respect, protect and love my family, particularly my children. As a father, I ask for your grace as we secure our space and privacy.”
