Wrestling Icon of the Ages: Hulk Hogans Nemesis Dead at 81

The world of professional wrestling mourns the loss of Hossein Khosrow Ali Vaziri, better known to millions of fans as “The Iron Sheik.” The wrestling legend, whose fierce rivalry with Hulk Hogan remains etched in the annals of sports history, passed away at the age of 81.

The Sheik’s death was announced on his Twitter feed, which stated:

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of The Iron Sheik, but we also take solace in knowing that he departed this world peacefully, leaving behind a legacy that will endure for generations to come. Beyond the wrestling persona that the world knew so well, The Iron Sheik was a devoted family man. He cherished the love and support of his wife of 47 years Caryl, who stood by his side through thick and thin, offering unwavering encouragement throughout his life.

Their bond was an anchor, providing him with the strength to face the challenges that life presented. To his children, Tanya, Nikki, Marissa and son in law Eddie, he was not just a wrestling icon. He was a loving and dedicated father. He instilled in them the values of perseverance, determination, and the importance of following their dreams.

Born on March 15, 1943, in Iran, Vaziri grew up idolizing Iranian wrestling great Gholamreza Takhti. Inspired by his hero, he aspired to join Iran’s Greco-Roman wrestling team for the 1968 Olympics. However, destiny had other plans for Vaziri, leading him to immigrate to the United States.

Upon arriving in America, Vaziri’s passion for wrestling found a new platform when he was invited by promoter Verne Gagne to join the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in 1979. Little did anyone know that this would mark the beginning of a storied career that would captivate audiences worldwide.

Vaziri’s most notable moment came in 1983 when he became the first Iranian champion in WWF history, clinching the prestigious WWF Heavyweight Championship. However, his reign was short-lived as the formidable Hulk Hogan swiftly snatched the title from him, igniting a fierce and long-lasting rivalry.

The iconic clash between The Iron Sheik and Hogan at the height of “Hulkamania” showcased the immense talent and charisma of both competitors. Vaziri’s signature move, the “Camel Clutch,” initially had Hogan trapped, but the irrepressible Hogan summoned his strength and ultimately emerged victorious, securing his place in wrestling folklore.

Beyond the ring, The Iron Sheik possessed a larger-than-life personality, exemplified by his often provocative and profanity-laden Twitter feed. His unfiltered remarks, including his recent tweet stating, “F*** Hogan,” underscored the intense emotions that lingered from their historic encounters.
