It is with heavy hearts that we report the tragic story of high school baseball star Jeremy Medina from Gainesville, Georgia. The 18-year-old was declared brain-dead on Wednesday after being accidentally struck in the head with a bat during a routine practice session late last month.
Medina, a standout player at Gainesville High School, was simply leaning into a batting cage net while a teammate was hitting balls. However, as the teammate followed through with his swing, Medina was struck in the head. Despite the best efforts of his teammates and coaches, Medina remained in a coma for two weeks before doctors made the heartbreaking decision to remove him from life support.
The news of Medina’s fate has devastated his community, teammates, and family. Principal Jamie Green described the incident as a tragic accident, with no horseplay, misconduct, or intent involved. Medina’s father, David, shared that his son had a scholarship offer to play college baseball and had hoped to become a youth minister while pursuing his dreams.

The close-knit community in Gainesville has rallied around the Medina family since the accident, with a local billboard pleading with residents to “Pray for Jeremy” as his prognosis grew grim. The school also made counselors available to comfort students who were in shock upon hearing the news.
