Watch: It Was The Perfect Moment To Propose Then the Unthinkable Happened, ‘Tell Me That Wasn’t What I Thought It Was’

Ross Bamber, 26, was ready to go. He had saved $1,200 for a gorgeous diamond engagement ring, booked a private dinner at a lakeside resort, and had the camera ready to go.

As Bamber walked his girlfriend Geri Ashforth, 23 onto a lakeside deck the unthinkable happened; the ring fell.

“I literally couldn’t believe it,” Bamber said. “I didn’t even manage to get down on one knee.”

As Ross went to take a knee he pulled out the ring and as he opened the box the ring fell out, bounced, then slipped through the deck boards into the lake.

“I heard it bounce, and thought, ‘Please, that can’t possibly be the ring…’ – my heart dropped,” Ashforth told the BBC.

“I took the ring out of my pocket and as I opened the box the ring fell out,” he further recalled. “It bounced a couple of times and then fell between the gaps of the decking.”

“Geri was quite upset about the whole thing,” Bamber stated. “She said to me when I dropped it ‘Tell me that wasn’t what I thought it was.’ I was like ‘Yes it was, I’m so sorry,’ and she said she didn’t want to look or even open her eyes.”

Below is a video and you’ll hear the ring hit the decking before it falls into the lake.

Friends immediately showed up putting on goggles hoping to find the ring but it was never recovered.

@geriiashforth Despite best efforts from our best friends .. our diamond ring has been lost to the lake forever 💍 #proposed #proposalgonewrong #inthelake #fyp #weregettingmarried #proposal ♬ Lost – Album Version – Frank Ocean

Not all was lost though.

Using a promise ring that Ashforth was wearing, Bamber proposed and she said “yes.”

Bamber also went out the next day and purchased another ring then took his new fiancee to the same place and recreated the proposal.

The new husband-to-be isn’t giving up on the ring either and the owner of the lake said he would be happy to help him recover the ring.
