Whoopi Goldberg has been under fire recently for her comments on the Holocaust, leading to a call for her termination from the popular talk show, “The View.”
In an interview with The Sunday Times, she doubled down on her past statements, claiming that Jews were not targeted based on their race. Goldberg suggested that Jews had an easier time blending in with White people and hiding from the Nazis than Black people did at the time of the Holocaust.
The comments have sparked a fierce outcry on social media, with Jewish activists and community members demanding Whoopi Goldberg face termination from “The View.” Goldberg’s Holocaust remarks in February led to her two-week suspension from the network and a subsequent apology, but her lack of remorse in her latest interview has some calling for her termination over her history of historically ignorant statements.
The Times of Israel called Goldberg’s comments “incendiary,” pointing out that while her real name is Caryn Elaine Johnson, the talk show co-host has no Jewish ancestry and adopted a more “Jewish-sounding” stage name.
The Jewish community has expressed outrage over Goldberg’s comments, criticizing her for perpetuating harmful stereotypes and minimizing the suffering of Jews during the Holocaust. Many have expressed disappointment that Goldberg has not taken the time to educate herself on the issue and has chosen to remain silent on the topic.
Holocaust survivor and author of “Long Journey Home: A Young Girl’s Memoir of Surviving the Holocaust,” Lucy Lipiner, scolded Goldberg for her disparaging comments saying,
“Whoopi Goldberg continues to use the Holocaust as her punching bag. We told her that her comments harm us and she simply doesn’t care.”
“I survived the Nazis and the Holocaust,” she continued, “so I’ll be damned if I let a comedy has-been, peddling a fake Jewish name get the better of me.”

Goldberg’s comments have sparked a debate about the importance of understanding history and the consequences of ignorance. It is clear that Goldberg must take responsibility for her words and commit to educating herself on the issue. Without taking these steps, it is difficult to see how she can remain on “The View.”
