Tim McGraw’s Emotional Goodbye

Multi-Grammy Award winner Tim McGraw recently opened up about the emotional experience of moving his eldest daughter Gracie across the country.

During an appearance on Audacy’s “Rob + Holly Show,” McGraw recalled taking all the seats out of his Cadillac Escalade and loading it up with Gracie’s stuff before driving her to Los Angeles. He admitted he “just lost it” when he dropped her off and had to drive home all by himself.

“I drove my daughter to L.A. when she moved out there and drove cross-country with her. I took all the seats out of my Cadillac Escalade and loaded it up with all of her stuff,” he said.

“When I dropped her off, I mean, I just lost it,” he continued. “And then I had to drive home all by myself… I was crying the whole time.”

McGraw and his wife, Faith Hill, have three daughters together in total: Gracie, 25, Maggie, 24, and Audrey, 21. McGraw admitted that it was an adjustment for him and Hill to have them out of the house and that there were a lot of tears.

“It was tough at first, you know. I mean, it’s always harder on Mom than it is on Dad, I think. But… there were a lot of tears,” he said.

McGraw’s experience of driving Gracie to Los Angeles inspired a song on his upcoming 17th studio album. He called his guitarist Bobby Miner after dropping Gracie off and had a “heart-to-heart,” which led to the creation of the song.

“In fact there’s a song on my new album coming up that guitar player Bobby Minner wrote, ’cause I called him when I was driving back from dropping Gracie off, and was just sort of having a heart-to-heart about dropping my daughter off,” he said of the tune.

“It’s based on my trip… It’s a good one,” he added.

McGraw and Hill have maintained a relatively private family life but have shared glimpses of their family life on social media. In January, Hill posted a video of McGraw dancing in the back seat to Olivia Rodrigo’s hit song “Good 4 You.” Hill wrote in the caption that the video was a rare look into a side of McGraw that only his daughters and she get to see.
